Our City. Our Union. Our History.
Welcome
Although this website was developed to celebrate CUPE Local 5167’s 100th anniversary (1918–2018), it is only a synopsis of the Local’s rich history. The stories you will discover here do not end in 2018 but, we hope, will become a living, breathing medium of the Local’s history.
History is more than just things that have happened in the past. The history of our movement is happening around us every day. Our history is found in legislation that affects public sector workers! It is also found in the experiences that our Local and our members have had at the bargaining table, on the picket line, or through participating in rallies and demonstrations. Our history is shown in our support for the broader labour movement and our continued support of the community.
Through The Years
Hardship and upheaval
The 1930s and ’40s were a time of important social, political, and economic change in Canada.
Working life in Hamilton
As the 1960s approached, Hamilton had become the most highly industrialized city in Canada.
The Merger
Although the new century brought challenges, it also brought a number of important wins for Local 5167.
